The Essex County Police Academy Firearms Training Facility is a state of the art, full service dynamic range, which was constructed in 2005 with 14 ports with removable barricades, double exterior doors, 2 classrooms, secure armory, FATS room and weapon cleaning room.
It is equipped with a Savage Range Systems “Wet Snail® System”, with low-angle entrance ramps and circular deceleration chamber, which results in virtually no airborne lead at the trap. In the Wet Snail® Trap, a mixture of biodegradable lubricant and water encapsulates any lead particles that may be generated before they become airborne and inhaled by the range users. This results in a safer and cleaner environment for the shooter. The Snail® System can be safely fired into at ‘point blank’ range without creating a ricochet hazard. It will accommodate non armor piercing ammunition up to and including 50 BMG.
Savage Range Systems has also developed a proven collection system for mining the trap with an AUTOMATIC BULLET RECOVERY system. Spent rounds are deposited in a convenient container outside the building for easy recycling, without impacting range availability. The range is serviced by Savage Range Systems on a monthly and quarterly basis.
The target system is a dynamic downrigger system with individual ports controlled remotely as well as a static control board, which is maintained by Triarii Metalworks.
The HVAC system for the range portion is a 100-ton Aaon unit that moves 10800 cfm of conditioned air through a laminar flow wall. The return air is filtered through a series of filter banks which contain pre filters and HEPA filters that are monitored and replaced frequently.
